Half a million people have now taken these tests and what they show is that, no matter where they live, human beings share the same core values. This is something very hopeful for the future, but also very concerning - as so many of the systems that we are currently having to live within do not seem to be supporting and promoting that things that most matter to us.
Five of the top values are about how we relate to the other people in our lives i.e. family, caring, respect, friendship, and trust - so healthy relationships are core to how we feel about ourselves. Five are about how we relate to ourselves (who we are( i.e. humour/fun, enthusiasm, commitment, creativity, and continuous learning - which means that self-expression is also really important. However, the results also show that we prioritise interpersonal safety over self-expression. So we really need to feel safe before we can express who are are. The results also show that the ability to develop and grow through continuous learning is of major importance to us. |
What this means is that we cannot grow and develop unless we feel safe. Once we feel safe, we can then focus on the things that really interest us and expressing who we really are as unique individuals. So, if we want to build a positive communities, we must first create the conditions that allow people to feel safe, especially our children, and then support everyone in their own self-expression.
